The Big Green Egg vs. Traditional Grills

The Big Green Egg brand of outdoor ceramic kamado style charcoal grill inspires a loyal following from devoted owners who call themselves “Eggheads”. But what are the advantages of Big Green Eggs over traditional grills? Armor Shields indeed sees great value in these kamado grills — so much so that we created decorative grill covers for Big Green Egg domes.

Advantage #1: Thick Ceramic Walls Trap Heat for Precise Temperature Control

In June 2017, Consumer Reports tested the Big Green Egg and “had no problem maintaining a temperature around 330° F for 6 hours. The impressive part is that we didn’t need to add coal or adjust the dampers once we dialed in the sweet spot — exactly the kind of control you’d want for ribs or pulled pork.” At the opposite extreme, high-heat cooking, they put the Egg “on par with the commercial broilers used in some of the world’s best steakhouses, which allow chefs to char the outside of a porterhouse while leaving it perfectly medium-rare inside.”

Note: Armor Shields are constructed to accommodate the Big Green Egg dome’s 2” or 3” thermometer so you can enjoy the same type of control as those chefs.

Advantage #2: Versatility

While a regular old grill probably works just as well on cooking burgers and brats, the Big Green Egg also excels as an oven and for smoking meats. It’s the perfect grill for making coal-fired pizza.

Advantage #3: Success Breeds Competition

With the popularity of the brand, other companies want to get on the bandwagon and even design their ceramic grills/smokers/ovens to accommodate Big Green Egg “EGGcessories”. Some of the better kamados include the Char-Griller 16620 Akorn Kamado KookerVision Professional S-Series KamadoGrill Dome Infinity SeriesPrimo Oval JRBroil King 911470 Keg 5000 Barbecue GrillKamado Joe ClassicWeber Summit Charcoal BBQ GrillHomdoor Charcoal Tandoor, and the Komodo Kamado Big Bad 32. Kamados come in a wide range of choices in all different sizes, shapes, and colors. That competition keeps Big Green Egg on its toes to improve its product to maintain its reputation for best-in-class products.

Advantage #4: Size

The most popular Big Green Egg, the “Large Egg,” is 18-inches in diameter. That’s big enough to cook a large turkey.

Advantage #5: Durability

Big Green Eggs are built to last and come with a limited lifetime warranty. They’ll last as long as they’re properly cared for, but it is ceramic. Grills designed with steel may be more protected against cracking if knocked over, but they can’t match the heat retention of ceramic, Plus, steel rusts over time.

You’ll spend a lot more for a Big Green Egg Large Ceramic Cooker — and there are some alternatives out there — but the Big Green Egg is viewed as the industry standard with good reason.

Advantage #6: It’s Not Just a Product—It’s a Lifestyle!

Eggheads enjoy a group experience with events like Eggtoberfest, an annual event each October in Atlanta, along with “Eggfests” in various cities across the nation. The company also offers culinary classes.
